Gourmet Chef at the Ronald McDonald House

Ronald McDonald House at the Children’s Hospital of Central California – May 1, 2012

There is nothing better than spending a couple of hours cooking for the children of the Ronald McDonald House! Seriously, such a heartwarming experience. Being a part of the Equestrian team, we volunteer multiple hours of community service each semester, and the Ronald McDonald House has been by far my favorite.

The team and I cooked around 30 various pizzas for the families on Tuesday. It was awesome. The coaching staff provided us all with every pizza topping possible! We had BBQ chicken, hawaiian, vegetarian, pepperoni, salami, cheese, and so much more, AND we have different sauces to go with it all, even some salad. Delicioso!

It was truly a blessing to cook all of these pizzas for the families at the Ronald McDonald House. They were so thankful for all of our hard work in the kitchen. A little girl came up to me after she ate, gave me a huge hug, and said thank you. It was so heartwarming.

I am so honored to say I am a member of the Fresno State Women’s Equestrian Team as we continuously volunteer in the community. Cooking for these families touched my heart and there was no better way to spend my Tuesday evening.

Live on Kings Court

A Community Benefit Concert, April 27, 2012

Such a great night! Brent Sasaki, Director of Corporate Sponsorships for the Sacramento Kings, asked me to volunteer at the Benefit Concert for Big Brothers Big Sisters of Sacramento in celebration of 50 years of service. It was such a great experience. I did multiple tasks throughout the night, and gained so much knowledge while doing it.

The evening started out with an exclusive VIP reception for the corporate sponsors, which included opportunities to meet Sacramento Kings legends, players, coaches, and dancers. During the reception, I assisted the photographer with the organization of groups taking pictures with The Greats and current players, some of which included: Scott Pollard, Jason Thompson, and Isaiah Thomas. That in its self, was an amazing experience. I was just feet away from these players, assisting them, the guests, and the photographers in a smooth environment.

Directly after the reception, a live auction was held to benefit the Sacramento Kings partnering charity, Big Brothers Big Sisters of Sacramento. In assisting the auctioneer, I was a spotter for specific auction items. I made sure the correct bidder was awarded the auction item and the winning price, all in a friendly environment. It was great fun to be around multiple people, all whom were excited to raise money for Big Brothers Big Sister of Sacramento. The partnering charity raised $30,000 on the night of the Benefit Auction.

To conclude the night, we were able to enjoy the entertainment by Grammy Award-winning band Blues Traveler. It was an outstanding experience, and I enjoyed every minute of it. I owe a huge thanks to Brent for helping me out within the sports industry.

Running Around SoCal with My Best Friend!

Irvine, CA. April 22, 2012

What an amazing day! Nikki and I ventured up to Orange County and did the 5k Color Run. Such an awesome run. When the race started we were in all white, from head to toe. As the race went on, we were pegged with color. Every kilometer mark was a different color mark, and they dumped the colored powder all over us. The first color was yellow, and Nikki got nailed in the face! Teeth and all. Then came green, then blue/purple, and the 4k mark was pink. This is when we both got blasted. We had pink all over us, and it stains. Oops!

With the last kilometer left, we ran hard to the end, where color was thrown all over us. But, nothing felt better than successfully finishing a 5k run, and having a blast while doing it! We ran to the “After Color Party” where color was thrown all over the place. So much color and so much fun.

After the run, we decided to go to Newport Beach to relax for a couple of hours. Nikki and I drove around and found a small entrance to a large beach and it wasn’t crowded at all! We ran into the water to take an ice bath so both of us wouldn’t be sore. Nikki had that idea, and it was a brilliant one! We laid on the beach for a couple hours and then went to my cousin’s house to get ready for our next adventure of the day…

We scored free tickets to the Clippers game! They were VIP Premium Level seats. It was amazing! So much fun, and a great game! The Clippers won 107-98. It was great fun, and a great way to end a perfect weekend with Nikki.

So, bottom line… My weekend was perfectly amazing and I would not have changed it for the world! Nikki is such a great friend and I had an awesome time.

“Beach”ing It Up!

Encinitas, CA. April 21, 2012

No better way to spend a weekend off than with a great friend and the beach! My friend, Nikki Kohls, lives in San Diego County in a town called Vista. I have not seen her in over a year, and we could not have asked for a better day today!

After sleeping in, we went to a hot yoga class in Encinitas. Nikki is in the process of training to be a yoga instructor, so I tagged along. It was so great, extremely hard, but extremely fun. I did not think it was even possible to sweat that much! We then walked around Encinitas and enjoyed the beautiful day.

We ended the the day trip to Encinitas by walking from Swami’s Beach to Moonlight Beach. It was absolutely beautiful. We collected seashells, climbed rocks, played in the water, found sand crabs, and so much more. It was such a great walk, and a great way to end the day after a hard yoga work out. I could not have asked for a better day with Nikki! I am living the best life. So blessed and thankful for every moment.

NCAA Regional Career in Sports Forum

San Francisco, CA. April 13, 2012 – April 15, 2012

Image

This past weekend I attended the NCAA Regional Career in Sports Forum in San Francisco as Fresno State Athletics’ nominated representative. To sum the weekend up in one word, outstanding! I learned so much, met so many people, and came home as a better student-athlete. I cannot thank Fresno State Athletics enough for nominating me and giving me this opportunity.

Friday, April 13, 2012

We began the forum on Friday night with an introduction meeting. As I was the only student-athlete to attend the forum from Fresno State, I was forced to mingle with student-athletes from other institutions. I ended up sitting with the student-athlete’s from UC Davis and they were a great group of people. Coincidentally, they had a career panel the night before with Brent Sasaki, the Director of Corporate Partnership of the Sacramento Kings. Brent has become a mentor to me in the past couple of months through a family friend. Anyway, Brent had mentioned me in the career panel for the UC Davis student-athlete’s. We live in such a small world! One of the UC Davis representatives was interested in getting in contact with Brent, and I was able help out. Networking at it’s finest!

The workshops began early Saturday morning in The Cannery room 209. It began with skills of being a leader, which was a great session. My favorite part of this session was defining ourselves and Courtney Lovely, the leader of the conference, told us to ask ourselves this question: “What do you want your tombstone to say about you?” At first, the question caught me off guard. But once I deeply thought about it, I asked myself, ‘how do I want people to remember me?’ So, this is what I came up with for my tombstone:

“She’s a small town girl who traveled the world with one

accomplished dream: live to laugh, love, learn, and ride.”

So now I ask you, what would you want your tombstone to say about you?

As the day went on, we had excellent workshop after excellent workshop. They included internship and graduate assistant panels, administrative panels, job search sessions, and my two favorites, the networking workshop, and the resume building session.

Paul Savage from UC Berkeley gave an amazing workshop on networking. He put networking in great perspective and taught us all how networking is one of the most important keys to getting our foot in the door towards our career in sports. Mr. Savage explained the do-s and don’t-s of networking and gave us numerous helpful tips to be an effective “networker”.

The resume building session was lead by Tiandra Finch; she also was one of the leaders in the conference. This session was, by far, the most informational part of the conference for me. I learned so many ways to improve my resume! Since the conference, I have put her suggestions to use and changed my resume around by personalizing it and editing the content, which has made my resume so much stronger.

The first day ended with an ice cream social and I left the conference room with greater knowledge about myself, the sports industry, careers, and how to land my “dream job” in professional sports.

Sunday, April 15, 2012

The final day of the forum was, once again, outstanding. We learned even more and had great speakers! My favorite one was Tony Stewart, an NFL Ambassador. He was a wonderful motivational speaker and spoke about the “Characteristics of Sweat:”

Stand up and speak of what you believe in.

              Work hard, but work smart.

              Effort and execution.

              Attitude is everything.

Trust your technique and team in triumph and trouble.

He then ended his workshop with this quote:

“You’re not as good as you think you are when you

win, you’re not as bad as your are when you lose.”

I loved hearing for a professional athlete; he seemed to have a connection with all of the student-athletes in the room, which was great. We then had an etiquette workshop with DeNita Turner. She informed us all on the importance of our etiquette 24/7 and gave us one goal:

“In business as in life … begin and

continue with the end in mind.”

And with that being said, this is a great place to end. This past weekend at the NCAA Regional Career in Sports forum opened my eyes to all of the great opportunities life has to offer me. I met incredible people, developed astounding leadership skills, and defined my personal brand.

Welcome!
